Our favorite splurge hotels in Mexico

Hotelito @ MUSA

Where? 40-50 minutes south of Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport (ZIH) via taxi, which MUSA arranges prior to your arrival (a pricy~$70 USD each way)

Vibe? MUSA is on a 177 acre plot of stunning ocean-front land. In short, it’ll be you, a handful of other groups/couples/dogs, and the wide0open and empty beach. Rooms are highly design-centric, with incredible Mexican craftsmanship, not to mention very sustainable (solar power, water filtration systems, etc.)

No. of rooms: 13, ranging from doubles to ocean-view suites. There’s a room type for everyone. In addition, you can rent a 5-bedroom villa

No. of restaurants and bars: 1 restaurant, 2 bars

Affiliations: MUSA is independently owned, however, you can book via Design Hotels via their new partnership

Location: Very remote, only a small town nearby

Terrestre Hotel

Where? 40-50 minutes north of Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM) via car or taxi

Vibe? Extremely similar to MUSA in the sense that the beach is extremely empty, it’s remote, and is focused on relaxation, solitude, and creativity. The service is unparalleled and each suite is an architectural masterpiece, with incredibly luxurious Mexican artistry/materials

No. of rooms: 14, each with a ground-floor garden, outdoor bathroom, and an upstairs terrace with a private pool and lounge area

No. of restaurants: 1 restaurant and mezcal bar, 1 ocean club (which may or may not be open)

Affiliations: It’s a part of Grupo Habita, a widely known and respected hotel group in Mexico. It’s also a part of the Marriott Bonvoy collection of Design Hotels

Location: Remote, with a very small handful of restaurants, bars, and other hotels (sister Hotel Escondido) nearby. It’s located right by Casa Wabi, a famous art haven. They’ll organize a tour. Don’t forget to go (but bring sunscreen/sun protection)

Hotel La Semilla

Where? 1.5 hours from Tulum International (TQO) Airport or 50 minutes from Cancun International Airport (CUN)

Vibe? A small, immaculately decorated house surrounded by an impeccable, gorgeous, green and lush garden

No. of rooms: 9, ranging from queen beds to king beds with patios

No. of restaurants: 1, only serving breakfast (which is included). Don’t skip out on this breakfast, it’s incredible

Affiliations: Design Hotels/Marriott Bonvoy

Location: Located in the best part of Playa del Carmen

Chable Yucatan

Where? 30 minutes from Merida International Airport (MIR)

Vibe? Luxury at its finest. It’s routinely awarded one of the best hotels in the world. This place has the largest tequila collection in the world, focuses on gastronomy, and has an amazing spa, fun experiences, wellness gulf, cigar bar, etc. The chef of the main evening restaurant is from the famous CDMX restaurant, Quintonil

No. of rooms: 30+, all of which have a pool. The rooms are massive, gorgeous, and cozy. There are also villas, which you can rent for a group

No. of restaurants: 3+, you can also do cooking experiences (highly recommend)

Palmaïa - The House of AïA

Where? one hour from Cancun Airport (CUN)

Vibe? Health-focused all-inclusive

No. of rooms: 234+, most of which (if not all) face the ocean with incredible views

Perk? The hotel is immaculate, with wellness classes every single day. While the emphasis is on vegan and vegetarian food, they always have options for carnivores. The food truly is incredible, especially for an all-inclusive
