Tips for transit
Rideshare (Uber or Didi)
Depending on where you are staying, rideshare apps might be the best option for you. Prices vary depending on the distance and time of day.
Safety tips:
Always check that the license plate and driver picture match what you see in the app.
This will be the safest way to move around the city, especially at night. Still, share your ride with someone when you are riding alone.
Take care of your things, and don’t forget to take your belongings when you get out of the car.
Taxi
This option might be a bit more affordable than rideshare apps in some situations, but not always.
Safety tips:
All taxis should have a card with the driver’s information and their picture facing out and clearly visible to you before boarding the vehicle. Check that they have that and that the picture matches the driver.
All taxi license plates in Mexico City start with A- followed by numbers; check that the license plate has that format.
When moving at night, share your location with a friend or colleague.
When you get into the vehicle, the “taximeter” should be at the initial stopping price of $8.74 , and add $1.07 every 45 seconds or 250 meters. Tell the driver you want to use the taximeter, or agree on a price with them BEFORE getting into the vehicle to avoid getting scammed.
Tarjeta de Movilidad Integrada
This card allows you to use pretty much all of the public transportation systems in the city. You can buy it at any Metrobus or Metro station, and load up to $500 in it.
Metrobus:
Cost per ride: $6
Safety tips:
Watch your belongings, carry your backpack in front of you and keep your phone and wallet in pockets with a closed zipper.
During certain times of day, there’s a section of the bus that is just for women (generally at the front); if you identify as one, feel free to ride there to stay away from possibly uncomfortable situations (and if you are not a woman, make sure you don’t find yourself in that area unless you want glares and authorities telling you to move).
Metro:
Cost per ride: $5
EcoBici App
Cost: There are different rates depending on how long you will be in Mexico.
Safety tips:
Wear a helmet!!!
Avoid riding after dark or with rainy weather.
